Speed Racer the Videogame was an exciting project for me, and I suspect everyone else I worked with. As soon as we got our eyes on the early pitch footage for the movie we knew that we had the opportunity to make an incredibly fun game (and with review scores for the movie being lower than the review scores for the game, we may have succeeded).
It was my second full project (the 4th title I had worked on), and my first chance at proving my worth. I got seated with a programmer and given the opportunity to work on creating a replay cam system for the title (along with other things like animated objects in the environments, previs for camera effects in-game and the look for the car select screen). The final product was something I am definitely proud of and working on the project even allowed me my first chance of having someone working under me.
All in all it was a great experience and a stepping stone in my career. Although there wasn’t a lot of character animating (read: none) in this game, it definitely helped me hone my eye for animating cameras and also helped me understand how programmers and animators are symbiotic when it comes to game development.
